When did you become a fan of horror and why?
I think I have been a horror fan since I was a tiny tiny kid. I was afraid of all horror movies. I would literally run and hide behind stuff or dare myself to quickly turn the channel past a horror movie that was on TV ( i remember doing this notably with Friday the 13th and Predator). Whats funny is while these films scared me I was spending my time being all about the bad guys of the cartoons and shows I would watch; Shredder, Skeletor, Tex Hex, Mum-Ra. Clearly my fear of horror films was my growing curiosity with the world of horror films.
How did you get into art and are you self taught or did you go to school?
I have been drawing since I can remember. Lots of ninja turtles then eventually scary stuff and villains. I was self taught. Try all art mediums. Brave the blank canvas and see what you vibe with. I didn’t go to art school nor did I take art class in high school. However the art teacher was a big believer in me as I struggled with my journey through being a troubled youth. She had my back even though I didn’t want to be taught anything. I did eventually take an art course at a community college. The professor failed me because he didn’t like my content of work.
You create numerous works of horror, what’s your favourite medium and materials to use?
My current choice of art materials is ink and watercolor. I am a huge fan of Sakurai products like Microns and Koi watercolors. I will work on canvas and paper alike.
Who is your favourite character to use?
I honestly couldn’t narrow done a favorite characters to paint. I have painted hundreds of different characters. It’s really all about the piece and making it awesome regardless. One year I issued myself an art challenge by creating Twilight paintings that would entice even the people who hated the series. I am not a fan in the very least but I wanted to create something awesome in spite of that. One was a painting of Edward stopping the van before it hit Bella. He was standing over her with his arm outstretched behind him as the front of the van crumpled over his palm and flipped into the air. It was epic.
What’s your favourite piece of work that you have created?
Adding to the disappointment, narrowing my favorite piece of art is also so impossible. I juts painted a Lydia piece hours before I wrote this interview that is quite stunning. Theres a Boba Fett that I painted where he represents a bunch of different times of warfare thats very awesome. Theres a dead tree I painted with an old swing hanging from it that I kept for my personal collection. A lot of people have actually tattooed it on the. Very hard question to answer. If I had to crate a book of my favorite pieces of mine it would be huge and rad.
Have you got any upcoming exhibitions coming up?
My showings have slowed down for the year as I also have a band called Cowboy Jukebox that gets incredibly busy. I also act on stage and tv/film and getting booked out has really interfered with being able to attend certain shows. I will do showings for galleries and store fronts like Sideshow Gallery here in Chicago. The best way to keep up it to keep close to my website and instagram account.
What are you working on at the moment?
At the moment I am diligently working on Daily Halloween Sketch 2016. About 5 years ago I started this event year I would draw a new horror themed piece every day in October. It’s seems to have become quite an event for most artist throughout the art community now. When I create these each day I make them available based on a “claim it” system for an incredibly low price. Paint it, post it, be fast enough to claim it as the buyer and CONGRATS you just scored one of my original pieces for like 70% off. While they started out as sketches they have now evolved into being full blown art pieces. But “Daily Halloween Sketch” just has a good ring to it.
As far as pop culture I will be launching a really cool line in November. I’m keeping it a secret. December will probably be Star Wars once again. And as far as original concepts go there are multiple lines I am working on. Many of which involve the female figure. Lastly I am juggling multiple art novels which I hope to start completing next year. Big, chaotic, audacious, scary, adventurous, bloody and daring original stories. I am very excited about them.
Aside from art stuff I am in the studio for music and gearing up for a lot of really great opportunities next year. I will also be growing my film production company Play Dead Films. A DIY film company I started with my buddy Chaz Dray. We actually did the short film based on the Marvel anit-hero Morbius: The Living Vampire that got a lot of awesome praise. Check out the Youtube channel as we will be posting every month or so.
What’s your favourite scary movie?
FAVORITE SCARY MOVIE!? Man these are tough questions. Theres of course a lot that go with saying like Halloween and Nightmare on Elm St Texas Chainsaw Massacre, etc etc. I think it’s silly to answer with stuff like that because OF COURSE those would be most people’s favorites so I like to answer with interesting stuff that isn’t the norm you would hear.
I found The Witch to be one of the most beautifully and haunting horror films ever created. I quite loved Cabin In The Woods for bringing something new and fresh to the genre with being self aware yet totally committing to being a horror. The Evil Dead “remake” is very high on my list for reinventing it’s own wheel and making something that could exist without Bruce Campbell. But perhaps the highest on my list is The Collector/The Collection. I consider them one single movie. It broke so many rules, the villain is one of the greatest new on screen slashers in the past two decades, the hero is proactive every step of the way and does what the audience wishes could be done. It’s all you want out of a great horror movie and then takes it upon itself to be even better than that. Oh and Monster Squad. I LOVE Monster Squad.
